Subtracting Integers

I’m assuming that you’ve already read CSEReviewer.com’s Adding Integers reviewer so let us now go to subtracting integers. Once again, the integer line is going to be part of this tutorial/reviewer and once you get familiar with the process, this equation won’t be a problem.

Integer Line

You’re probably thinking why I separated this reviewer into another entry. Subtracting integers requires a key additional step before we can go into the number line. That step is: “To subtract an integer, add its opposite”. Basically  when doing subtraction, you are still going to add an integer. Let’s look at an example below.

8 – 12 = ?

To do this process, change the subtraction sign into an addition sign and then convert the opposite value of the subtrahend. For our example, leave 8 as it is, change the minus sign into plus sign, and then change +12 into -12. As a result, our example above will look like this:

8 + (-12) = ?

We can now proceed to the integer line.

As you can see, by adding -12 to (positive) 8, we are going to the left side of the integer line by 12 spaces. Don’t be confused now, even if you are “adding” you will still go to the left because it is a negative (in this case, -12) number that has to be added. So the final equation will look like this;

8 + (-12) = -4

Let’s do another example before we head on to our sample subtracting integers test exercises;

-7 – 14 = ?

This time we are dealing with a negative integer as the first number. However, that doesn’t matter because we will just leave it as it is. So -7 will stay as -7. For the next part, change the minus sign into plus sign and then change +12 into -12. After doing so, you will end up with this equation; -7 + (-14). Now onto the integer line once again.

We started here at -7 and must now add -14. Therefore, we need to go 14 spaces to the left of the integer line so we move all the way to -21. So our final equation will look like;

-7 + (-14) = -21
