Hi there! In this FREE CSE Reviewer post, we’re going to learn how to convert decimals to fractions. As you know, fractions and decimals are present in both the Sub-Professional and Professional Civil Service Exam. Acing this type of problem will help you pass the test more easily. Moreover, converting decimals to fractions can also be useful in many real-life situations, such as baking recipes or calculating the correct dosage of medicine.
Before we convert decimals to fractions, let’s first understand what decimals and fractions are. A decimal is a number that is expressed in the form of a base-10 number system with a decimal point. For example, 0.6, 1.35, and 3.44 are all decimals. On the other hand, a fraction is a number that represents a part of a whole. For example, 1/5, 2/8, and 3/7 are all fractions.
Now, let’s convert a decimal to a fraction. To do this, we’ll follow these 4 simple steps:
- Identify the place value of the digits after the decimal, in the number.
- Use that to determine what the denominator of the fraction would be.
- Remove the decimal point. Re-write in the fraction form and simplify it.
- Express in terms of the lowest Equivalent fraction.
Convert Decimals to Fractions Example
Convert 0.375 to a fraction.
Step 1: Identify the place value of the digits after the decimal, in the number. In this case, the digit 3 (the highest in the order) is in the thousandths place.
0.375
Step 2: Use that to determine what the denominator of the fraction would be. Since 3 is in the thousandths place, the denominator will be 1000.
0.375/1000
Step 3: Our convert to fraction process is almost complete! Remove the decimal point. Re-write in the fraction form and simplify it.
375/1000
Step 4: Express in terms of the lowest Equivalent fraction. You can do that by finding out their Greatest Common Factor or GCF which is 125.
375 ÷ 125 = 3
1000 ÷ 125 = 8
So, 0.375 can be expressed as a fraction as 3/8.
