When it comes to multiplying and dividing integers, I can say it’s quite easy. Yeah, much easier than adding or subtracting integers. Although it involves both positive and negative numbers, the multiplication and division process kinda works exactly the same way. Multiplying and Dividing Integers Rules

When faced with a question involving integer multiplication or division during the Civil Service exam, all you have to do is remember these simple rules;

  • Odd numbers of negative factors equals positive (+)
  • Even numbers of negative factors equals negative (-)

Onto the first rule. Let’s try an example:

(-8) × (8) = -64

 

There is only one negative factor in this problem. ONE (1) is an ODD NUMBER so the answer is negative (-). Let’s try another one. This one’s very easy. There is no negative factor and ZERO (0) is considered an EVEN NUMBER so you just proceed with your normal multiplication.

5 × 5 = 25

Again, odd numbers of negative factors equals positive (+). You do know what odd numbers are, right? Great. Now we know the two rules of multiplying integers, we can now have an easier time solving them.

(-8) × (-8) × (-8) × (-8) = ?

 

There is an EVEN NUMBER of negative factors in the example above so they will form pairs that will balance each other out and will give us a positive answer. So the equation will be like this;

(-8) × (-8) × (-8) × (-8) = 4096

 

And if we have an ODD NUMBER of negative factors, let’s say…

(-8) × (-8) × (-8) = ?

After all the pairs are balanced, there will always be a negative factor left and that will give you a negative answer. Therefore;

(-8) × (-8) × (-8) = -512

 

Don’t forget when multiplying integers with different signs; ODD NUMBER of negative factors equals negative (-) and EVEN NUMBER of negative factors equals positive (+).

The rule in division with negative and positive numbers is as follows:

  1. If both the dividend (numerator) and the divisor (denominator) have the same sign (both positive or both negative), the quotient (result) will be positive.

For example: 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and (-15) ÷ (-5) = 3

  1. If the dividend and the divisor have different signs (one is positive and one is negative), the quotient will be negative.

For example: (-12) ÷ 4 = -3 and 12 ÷ (-4) = -3

10 ÷ 2 = 5

 

When it comes to division, the sign of the quotient (result) depends on the signs of the dividend (numerator) and divisor (denominator).

10 ÷ (-2) = -5

 

Since both the dividend (numerator) and the divisor (denominator) have the same sign, the quotient (result) will be positive.

(-10) ÷ (-2) = 5
