It’s now time for some integers. While some of you might think that this is just basic, there are those who are still confused by its process. Learning how to add integers will help you tackle those Civil Service Exam questions a bit easier. The addition of these types of numbers is easy as long as you know the proper strategies. It would also help you a lot if you try to remember the “integer line”.
What the integer line helps you with is that it simplifies what you have to remember when dealing with integers. You don’t have to remember what sign to change, what sign to retain or whatever. With this method, you only have to know which side to go, left, or right. With that said, let’s go over the four cases when it comes to adding integers.
Case 1: Adding Positive Numbers
This one is very basic. Let’s say you have to add +2 to +7. You are just doing a regular addition with this process. Based on the integer line, you start with a positive number and make it more positive. So 2+7 would be 9. Easy, right?
Case 2: Adding Negative Numbers
How about when adding a negative number to a negative number, let’s say -3 + -4? Have a look at the image below.
As you can see, we started at -3 and we are adding -4. That means you have to go four places to the left of the integer line. Pretty easy to remember.
Case 3: Adding a Negative Number to a Positive Number
Our next example is 7 + (-3) To some, this is a bit confusing but with the help of the integer line, we will clear things up.
Unlike in Case No.1, adding a negative integer to a positive integer makes us go left on the integer line. So 7 + (-3) would be 4. But what if the negative number is bigger than the positive number? Well, just go further left as you can see in the image below. 7 + (-9) = -2.
Case 4: Adding a Positive Number to a Negative Number
Just like in Case no. 3 but this time when you add a positive integer to a negative integer, you will be starting from the left and going to the right. Again, refer to the image below.
Here we started from -9 in the integer line. Adding positive 7 will give us the answer -2 since we have to go seven places to the right. If the positive integer that you are going to add is bigger, let’s say 11, then just go further right, giving you the answer 2 or +2, like the one in the example below.
Adding and subtracting two integers is fairly basic, but what if you have to add or subtract three or more of them? Watch the video below so that you won’t get confused when you encounter a problem in the Civil Service Exam regarding adding of three or more integers.
